Across the European Union young people are leaving
home at a later and later age. In 2013 youth leaving home were on average 26.1
years of age. Youth in Sweden left home before youth of other countries and
Croatian youth remained home longer than youth of other countries.
Young people in Nordic countries leave the nest before
other youth in Europe. The countries where young people left home earlier than
the average were Sweden (19.6 years of age), Denmark (21 years), and Finland
(21.9 years), followed by The Netherlands (23.5 years), France (23. 6 years),
and Germany (23.9 years).
Youth remaining at home longer – leaving home later
in life – were in Croatia (31.9 years), Slovakia (30.7 years), Malta (30.1
years), and Italy (29.9 years).
In every European Union country, females left home
earlier than males. The greatest gender differences were in Bulgaria (26.8
years for women and 31.3 years for men), Romania (26.2 years for women and 30.7
years for men), and Croatia (30.3 years for women and 33.7 years for men).
