World Environment Day is celebrated globally on 5 June every year. Established by the United Nations (UN) in 1974, it is a platform for action on environmental issues.
The theme for the 2018 World Environment Day is Beating Plastic Pollution.
Each year, World Environment Day is hosted in a different country, where the official celebrations take place. The focus on the host country helps highlight the environmental challenges it faces, and supports the effort to address them. This year's host is India.
