Not
far from the capital of Mauritius, Port Louis, is a volcanic crater – now carpeted
in moss, undergrowth, shrubs and trees. It is in the centre of the island on
the ridge of a hill with views of the small city, Curepipe. About 300 metres
wide and 650 metres deep it is now a tourist attraction where people can view
the crater and the spectacular views of the island.
From
the crater you can see the coastline and the curiously shaped mountains: Rempart
Mont, the three peaks of Les Trois Mamelles, and Mont St. Pierre. As well as the city Curepipe at
the base of the crater the view includes Port Louis, Quatre Bornes (also known
as La Ville des Fleurs – the City of Flowers), Moka, Reduit, Rose Hill, and the
Plaines Wilhems District. Nearby are the botanical gardens.
