The 63rd Eurovision Song Contest took place in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, the City of Convergence, on 8 and 10 May, with the grand final on 12 May 2018. It is the world’s largest and longest-running song contest.
In May 2017, Portuguese singer Salvador Sobral won the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. This meant that Portugal could host the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest.
Twenty-six countries contested the finals on 12 May. Entrants from the ‘Big Five’ countries automatically qualified for the finals – France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom – as well as the host country, Portugal. With them were 10 out of 19 contestants from the first semi-final and 10 out of 18 contestants from the second semi-final. People from 43 countries were eligible to vote.
