MARTINA NICOLLS - NEWS AND UPDATES FOR SEPTEMBER 2020
Hello everyone. September is the months of autumn, or fall, in the Northern Hemisphere. Summer in Paris was quiet due to the summer vacation, when the French typically go to the coast for their holidays. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there were fewer tourists, especially American tourists. And on Friday 28 August, the mayor of Paris announced that face covering must be worn inside and outside for everyone except people exercising or under 12 years of age, due to the high number of increased cases of Covid-19 (6,111 new cases reported on 27 August).
Due to begin on 27 June, the 2020 Tour de France cycling event was delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, the first stage (Le Grand Départ) began on 29 August in Nice. After 21 stages, it is expected to conclude down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris on 20 September.
This email includes updates on Paris, my animal website, my aid development work, articles, photography, and general points of interest.
Regards, Martina

POPULAR BOOK REVIEWS My most popular book review in August was Erin Hortle's 'The Octopus and I' but last month I preferred Gertrude Stein's 'The Autobiography of Alice B. IN THE ARCHIVE: BLUE MOON This time 8 years ago, I wrote about the Blue Moon that occurred on Friday August 31, 2012: 'The blue moon occurs approximately every 2.5 years when there is a second full moon in a single month. It happens when the first full moon is early in the month and the last full moon is four weeks later, still within the same month. August’s first full moon appeared on August 2. It only happens in months with 31 days, usually August and December, and only every two-and-a-half years. The last blue moon occurred on 31 December 2009. The expression "once in a blue moon" is used colloquially to mean “not very often” or “rarely.” The moon does not actually change colour, although it occasionally appears to change colour due to dust particles in the atmosphere. Some people say that when you get two full moons in one calendar month, the second one brings surprises and occurrences that turn up suddenly - “out of the blue.” So, here is an early heads up: the next Blue Moon is, no not September, but October 2020. There is a full moon on October 1, 2020, and another full moon on October 31, 2020, The second full moon on October 31 is the blue moon - which falls on Halloween in America! The photo that I took below is not a blue moon. It's the Paris moon in June. In 2019. By the light, of the silvery moon ... TAKE A LOOK AT THE MOON AND MERCHANDISE |
LITERATURE AND THEATRE The poetry of Englishman John Keats is undergoing a transformation. A dedicated group of musicians and friends has created the Keats the Musical (KTM) project to set his poems to music. I wrote an article for the KTM website.
