The city of Strasbourg is in eastern France at the border with Germany, 397 kilometres (247 miles) east of Paris.
It is the official seat of the Eureopean Parliament and its historic city centre was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
The River Ill runs through the city, and the port of Strasbourg is the second largest port on the Rhine River (after Duisburg in Germany) and the second largest river port in France (after Paris).
It is noted for its architecture of black and white timber-framed buildings, Gothic cathedral, barges, medieval bridges, ancient streets, Roman history, parks, and museums.
