The church of Saint Sulpice has undergone a magnificent renovation. The Baroque church in Paris was constructed in stages, starting in 1646 and continuing until 1670. The second main stage commenced from 1719 to 1745. It was damaged in the Revolution and restored in the 19th century. It is the second largest church in Paris. Notre Dame is the largest.
The
church is also known as the Cathedral of the Rive Gauche – the Cathedral of the
Left Bank. Recent renovations have restored the façade with its Italianate
design of colonades. The north tower is 73 metres high, but the south tower is
only 68 metres.
In front of the church, in the Place Saint Sulpice square, is a fountain designed by Ludovico Visconti in 1844, which has also undergone a recent renovation. It features sculptures of four bishops (Fenelon, Massillon, Bossuet, and Flechier) of the Louis XIV period.
