Sunday morning at the Nairobi National Museum (part of the National Museums of Kenya) is quiet and an ideal time to meander around the halls, exhibitions, and art galleries – as well as the Snake Park.
In
1910 the museum was established by the East Africa and Uganda Natural History
Society – currently the East Africa Natural History Society. A larger building was
constructed in 1922. It moved to its current site at Museum Hill in 1929 and
was officially launched in 1930. The Museums and Heritage Act came into effect in
2006 to protect Kenya’s heritage.
It
closed in October 2005 for extensive renovations and expansion, and opened
three years later in 2008.
The
Museum complex included the Hall of Mammals, Cradle of Humankind, Historia Ya
Kenya, Cycles of Life, Birds of East Africa, the Great Hall, History of Nairobi
Museum, and temporary exhibitions of artworks. The artwork exhibitions
currently on display included the Joy Adamson Exhibition and Transient by Josefina
Munoz to June 2, 2014.
