Six generations in one British family - and they are all female

In the United Kingdom there is currently only one family to have six generations alive at the same time – and they are all female. The British family is believed to be only the second family in the UK to have six generations alive at the same time. The world-record for the highest number of living generations in the same family is seven, which was achieved in 1989 by a family in America.

Ruby Snowling is 100 years old. Ruby had eight children with her husband Russell before he died in 1979, aged 72. Ruby now lives with her 81-year-old son Albert in Norfolk.

In the photograph, Ruby is in the middle, holding Meiche. Ruby’s daughter is 79-year-old Dorothy Matthews, in the dark trousers sitting next to Ruby. Dorothy and her husband Donald have two children, and they live nearby.

Dorothy’s daughter is 60-year-old Sandra Smith, who is sitting on the opposite side of Ruby. Sandra and her husband Derek, from Suffolk, have two children.

Sandra’s daughter is 40-year-old Samantha from Norwich – behind the sofa on the right-hand-side.

Samantha’s daughter is Porche Hume, next to her mother. Porche gave birth to Meiche in February 2016. One-year-old Meiche is sitting on her great-great-great grandma’s lap.

The age difference from the oldest to the youngest is 99 years.

Sandra said: “Luckily for us we have old age running in our family. We never thought our family was anything special. It is marvellous for my nan Ruby to be a great great great grandma. She is fantastic for her age and still has all her faculties.”

Sandra said the secret to Ruby’s long life is “being honest and straight with everyone and hard working. We have all been brought up with good morals and that is what makes a difference. My nan was a hard worker and so was my mum - and my children have also worked hard.”
