The Town Hall of the 6th arrondissement in Paris is exhibiting the works of Tunisian-French painter Gilbert Zitoun. The exhibition Précurseur de l’abstraction – Precursor of Abstraction – is open from 22 March to 12 April 2023.
Gilbert Zitoun (1926-2019), professor of Fine Arts in Tunis, arrived in Paris in September 1964. He burned all of his paintings before the left Tunis. His aim was to re-build his life in Paris, the capital of modern art, inspired by the new American abstract artists.
Now recognized as a noted Parisian abstract artist, it is said that he ‘injects emotion into the abstract, mixing purity and darkness. Its strength: the lines that cut space and illuminate what does not exist.’
