For the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, officials have estimated that a total of 10,000 flags will be required for the Games to run smoothly.
Officials say that the flags are at the heart of the Games and its celebrations. More than 200 countries will be represented at the Olympic Games, and more than 180 countries at the Paralympic Games.
The 10,000 flags will be hoisted in front of Games venues, carried in the opening ceremony, and raised during the medal ceremonies.
At Paris 2024, there will be a team of people dedicated to designing, approving, installing, and re-using the flags.
For example, the Flag Team needs to ensure that the Olympic flag is larger than all other flags during the opening and closing ceremonies. During events, not all countries will have their flag flown at each competition venue. Only the countries that have individual athletes or teams entered in the event hosted at the competition venue will have their flags displayed. However, the five-ring Olympic and Paralympic flags are flown in all venues and in all host cities across France.
