“Little sister, don’t you do what your big sister done!” Do you remember the lyrics of the 1961 Elvis Presley song Little Sister composed by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman?
Well, my big sister was in the garden pruning a tree with a reciprocating saw.
A reciprocating saw is a small, hand-held, battery-powered saw for pruning plants. It has a large, sharp blade that moves in an up-and-down, back-and-forth motion. You can see where this story is going!
She says, “Within a split second, I managed to get my finger in the top of the reciprocating saw” … probably caused by the kick-back when the saw and the branch repelled.
Fortunately, she was wearing thick gardening gloves. Strangely, there was no damage to the gloves – only to the tip of her finger, which she nearly sawed right off.
Initially, she thought she had only bruised her finger, but no, it was much worse. After a couple of hours in hospital and a multitude of stitches, she has restored the fingertip.
So, when gardening, wear gloves, and “little sister, don’t you do what your big sister done!”
