Quantum Physics for Beginners: From Quantum Confusion to Clarity: A Beginner’s Guide to Understanding Core Concepts and Key Ideas in Quantum Physics by Orion Wells (2015) aims to simplify complex scientific principles and theories.
This is a comprehensive book with 12 chapters covering quantum principles, light and matter, the uncertainty principle, quantum entanglement, quantum tunneling, the mathematics of quantum mechanics, probability and statistics, computing and artificial intelligence (AI), cryptography, the theory of relativity, paradoxes, the big bang, and everyday life. And so much more.
The structure is easy to follow, the font is readable, the dot points are succinct, the graphics are sparse and relevant, and the use of mathematical equations is limited or simplified so as not to overwhelm readers.
I have qualifications in mathematics so I went straight to that chapter. Orion Wells states, “If you’re concerned about the complexity of these topics (i.e., linear algebra, complex numbers, and the renowned Schrodinger Equation), rest assured, I will simplify these concepts to make them accessible and engaging.” And he does. In this chapter, he uses brief definitions of terms, uncluttered tables, and while there are equations, they are clearly explained. I like his explanation of the role of mass in quantum mechanics and the alternative approach to the Schrodinger Equation.
His chapter on AI is topical and timely. It is also well articulated, as with the other chapters. I think readers will be interested in this section, but also the section on cryptography and the Enigma machine used in Britain during World War II.
Chapter 9 on “Quantum Mechanics in Everyday Life” grounds the theory in practical real-world examples and products – such as bird navigation, how sensors work, and GPS technology.
I especially liked the author’s section on “Possible Answers to the Thought Challenges” which he adds to the end of every chapter.
The author has done a great job in doing exactly what he stated he would do – clarify confusion by presenting key ideas in quantum physics; educate, enlighten, and entertain; and fascinate readers with paradoxes and thought-provoking discussions.
