Livestock is estimated to be 65% of the Somaliland economy. Land under cultivation is estimated at 3% of the total area, due to low rainfall and poor soil fertility, although another 7% has potential for agricultural development. The main crops are cereals, especially sorghum (70%), maize (25%), and millet, cowpeas, and barley.
Fishing
occurs along the coastline, with fish such as tuna, snapper, barracuda,
mackerel, and bream. There are also sea cucumber, shrimp, lobster, and crab.
Most fishing is artisanal, rather than commercial. Fish caught at Berbera are
transported to Hargeisa or Burao (Burco) for local consumption. There is one
fish cannery in Sanaag, built in 2002.

ReplyDeleteIt was taken from the highway out of the city of Berbera - and on the way from Berbera to Hargeisa - before the checkpoint that marks the end of the city precinct.
