The United Nations General Assembly, on December 20,
2013, declared 2015 the International Year of Light. It commemorates the
Optical Society, which is one of the nine founding scientific organizations
working with the UN to obtain the formal declaration.
The International Year of Light (IYL2015) is a global
initiative that will highlight the importance of light and optical technologies
in the lives of every citizen, and for the development of society.
The Chinese New Year, the Lunar New Year, will
commence on February 19. It will mark the Year of the Goat. This is sometimes
referred to as the Year of the Sheep or Year of the Ram.
