Georgian artist, Zurab Tsereteli (1934-), born in Tbilisi, is interested in painting or sculpting his contemporaries. One of them is American comic actor Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977). Chaplin’s silent movies, with slapstick humour, included The Kid (1921), The Circus (1928), Modern Times (1936), The Great Dictator (1940), and Limelight (1952).
Zurab Tsereteli produced a series of paintings, three-dimensional enamels, and sculptures of Charlie Chaplin in 2006-2007. Many of the the are exhibiting in his gallery in Tbilisi, Georgia – the Zurab Tsereteli Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).
Geraldine Chaplin, the daughter of Charlie Chaplin, visited the Tsereteli Art Gallery in Moscow in June 2011 to view an exhibition dedicated to her father. Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts, exhibited his Charlie Chaplin series in various media, from sketches to bronze reliefs.
