Mount Kenya is the
highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest mountain in Africa, after Mt
Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
Mount Kenya
in central Kenya, about 16 kilometres (10 miles) south of the Equator and 150
kilometres (93 miles) north of the capital Nairobi, is 5,199 metres tall
(17,057 feet), while Mt Kilimanjaro is 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) tall. The strato-volcanic
mountain was originally higher than Mt Kilimanjaro.
Mount Kenya
has three distinct peaks: Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana, with eleven small glaciers.
An area
around the centre of the mountain is designated a National Park and listed as a
UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
