The
Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane, Australia, is holding an exhibition
of Japanese fashion from 1 November 2014 to 15 February 2015.
The
exhibit, of over 100 pieces, commences its selection from the 1980s and ends
with the present day. Called Future Beauty it explores a range of designs and
motifs collected from the Kyoto Costume Institute. These include minimalist
designs to origami-type foldable dresses to the early 2000’s “Cool” Japan
subculture dressing to elaborate techno-futuristic fashions. Ranging from the
initial pieces at the start of the collection in black and white (a tribute to
shadows) it covers the gamut of colour – but mostly the fashion includes the
iconic colours of black and red.
Future
Beauty features designers such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des
Garcons, Junya Watanabe, Yohji Yamamoto, Jun Takahashi, Tao Kuihara, Hiroaki
Ohya, Matohu, Mikio Sakabe, Akira Naka, and mintdesigns.
