The children’s classic, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s
Adventures in Wonderland published in 1865 has endured for 150 years. It
was first written as Alice Under Ground
for a little friend called Alice Liddell (1852-1934). Usually just referred to
as Alice in Wonderland it has been
translated into 174 languages. Its sequel, Through
the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, was published in 1872.
Lewis Carroll, from England, was a mathematician whose real name was
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898). His love of mathematical games inspired
his writing, including card games, chess, and logic. His characters were also
bewitchingly mesmerizing, such as the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad
Hatter, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and the Red Queen.
To mark 150 years, there have been celebrations, plays, movies, new books,
and illustrations this year.
