Part of the Ketevan Matabeli ‘Retrospective Exhibition’ held at the National
Gallery in Tbilisi, includes her works from the Games Series (1994).
Ketevan Matabeli (1953-) is a Georgian painter and graphic artist, using textured
art techniques such as collage and assemblage – usually called composition art.
These show her use of rusty metal, burnt wood, and material. Using this
technique and her interest in old game boards, she developed a series of art
around this theme. The exhibition includes a series of her works called the Games
Series (1994) – with themes such as chess, backgammon, cards, and dominoes. The
exhibition runs from 9-20 December 2015.
On the floor from one room to another is an installation of a giant chessboard. Visitors have to walk on it to enter the room.
