The Afghanistan Times reports that the Kabul Municipality announced on
Sunday 22 January 2017 that there are 100-150 dog bites and rabies deaths
annually across Afghanistan.
“Mad and stray dogs spread
rabies via biting, which is not too simple to be cured and it causes death to
100-150 people in various parts of the country annually,” said Deputy of Kabul
Municipality, Masihullah Mahbob.
Residents of capital city,
Kabul, have complained about the presence of stray dogs in the streets. They claim
that authorities are not doing enough to address the health threats posed by the
stray dogs in Kabul city.
The Kabul
Municipality has signed an agreement with the Mayhew Animal Home Association to
vaccinate stray dogs to reduce the threat of rabies for Kabul residents. The
vaccine will be imported from India said Mayhew Animal Home project manager, Abdul
Jalil Mohammadzai.
“Kabul Municipality and the Mayhew
Animal Home Association will jointly focus on educating people over the
threat,” he said.
