From 20 January to 5 February, 2016, an exhibition displays the works of
both Archpriest Alexander Chakhvashvili and artist Budu Sirbiadze at the
Georgian National Museum’s Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts.
In one room the works show 37 oil paintings of Budu Sirbiladze and 22 ecclesiastic
pieces of Archpriest Alexander Chakhvashvili using mixed techniques on
cardboard.
Sirbiladze’s pieces are mainly from 2007-2015, with a few from the 1990s,
of landscapes, portraits, and abstracts. My favourite is the Bee (2010) which
has an abstract background and a detailed painting of a single bee in the
centre.
All of Archpriest Alexander Chakhvashvili’s works depict the Holy Martyrs,
Kings and Queens, of Georgia. These include the King of Ethiopia – the Blessed
Elezvoi – and King David the Builder, the Great King Vakhtang Gorgasali, and Queen
Tamar (who ruled in her right as head of the country from 1184 to 1213).
MARTINA NICOLLS is the author of:-
The Shortness of Life: A Mongolian Lament (2015), Liberia’s Deadest Ends
(2012), Bardot’s Comet (2011), Kashmir on a Knife-Edge (2010) and The Sudan
Curse (2009).
