2016: the most-searched food terms





Australia's most-searched food terms of 2016 – on google – were related to baking.

The 10th most-searched food term was brownies. Chocolate brownies originated in America. The main ingredients are flour, butter, eggs, chocolate or cocoa powder, and sugar. They are a flat, baked cake-cookie combination that often includes chocolate chips or nuts. They are popular finger-food eaten in cafes and coffee houses.



The 9th most-searched food term was crepes. Crepes (meaning curled) originated in France. The main ingredients are wheat flour or buckwheat flour, milk, and eggs. They are flat and thin, like pancakes, and can have sweet or savoury fillings – or just topped with maple syrup – so they can be a dessert or a meal.



The 8th most-searched food term was chocolate mousse. The dessert of chocolate mousse originated in France. The main ingredients are whipped egg whites or whipped cream and chocolate. They are light and fluffy with a creamy texture.



The 7th most-searched food term was quiche. Quiche – a savoury pie – originated in France (pronounced keesh). The main ingredients are a pastry case (a crust) filled with custard and cheese and other items added, such as tomatoes, meat, seafood, or vegetables.



The 6th most-searched food term was cheesecake. Cheesecake may have originated in Greece. The dessert’s main ingredients are a crust base with soft cream cheese or ricotta, eggs, and sugar.




The 5th most-searched food term was hummus. Hummus (Arabic for chickpeas) originated in Egypt as a spread or dip of cooked and mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and garlic. It is spread on any type of bread.



The 4th most-searched food term was scones. Scones originated in the United Kingdom as a cake or quick-cooked bread. The main ingredients are wheat, barley, or oatmeal with baking powder and yeast. They are often served with jam and cream, or with butter.



The 3rd most-searched food term was banana bread. Banana bread originated in America as a sweet bread. The main ingredients are mashed over-ripe bananas with baking soda.



The 2nd most-searched food term was carbonara. Cabonara is a hot main course of pasta, originating in Italy. The main ingredients are pasta, eggs, bacon, black pepper, and grated cheese.



The most-google-searched food term for 2016 in Australia was pancakes. Pancakes are like fatter crepes or drop scones. They originated in Greece as ‘cake in a pan.’ The main ingredients are eggs, milk, and butter. They are cooked on a hot surface, such as a frying pan, and can be sweet or savoury.

Flaws in the Glass, a self-portrait by Patrick White: book review

The manuscript, Flaws in the Glass (1981), is Patrick Victor Martindale White’s autobiography. White, born in 1912 in England, migrated to Sydney, Australia, when he was six months old. For three years, at the age of 20, he studied French and German literature at King’s College at the University of Cambridge in England. Throughout his life, he published 12 novels. In 1957 he won the inaugural Miles Franklin Literary Award for Voss, published in 1956. In 1961, Riders in the Chariot became a best-seller, winning the Miles Franklin Literary Award. In 1973, he was the first Australian author to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for The Eye of the Storm, despite many critics describing his works as ‘un-Australian’ and himself as ‘Australia’s most unreadable novelist.’ In 1979, The Twyborn Affair was short-listed for the Booker Prize, but he withdrew it from the competition to give younger writers the opportunity to win the award. Sister cities discussed: Canberra and Islamabad

Two months ago, in March 2015, Australia and Pakistan agreed to explore ways to deepen ties. The relationship between Australia and Pakistan has been strong for decades, and the two countries continue to keep dialogues open. The annual bilateral discussions were held in Australia in March to continue engagements on a wide range of matters of mutual interest. The Pakistan delegation discussed points of interest will include sports, agriculture, economic growth, trade, border protection, business, and education. The possible twinning of the cities of Canberra, the capital of Australia, and Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, were also on the agenda (i.e. called twin towns or sister cities). Sister City relationships are twinning arrangements that build friendships as well as government, business, culture, and community linkages. Canberra currently has international Sister City relationships with Beijing in China and Nara in Japan. One example of existing
