Canberra, the capital of Australia, is
known as ‘the Bush Capital’ because it is surrounded and interspersed with
natural scrublands.
Canberra’s bush continues to be
recognised and protected in the National Capital Plan. The National Capital
Open Space System covers over 70% of the Australian Capital Territory, and
includes the hills, ridges, and buffers between urban zones – such as the
Molonglo River Corridor, the Murrumbidgee River Corridor, Lake Burley Griffin,
and extensive mountains and bushland to the south of the city.
This is a permanent exhibition at the Canberra
Museum and Gallery.
