The
Canberra Museum and Gallery is holding an exhibition of Eirene Mort’s works,
called Eirene Mort: A Livelihood from 30 September 2017 to 25 February 2018.
The
exhibition marks the 40th anniversary of Eirene Mort’s death at the age of 98.
Eirene Mort (1879-1977) was a prolific artist, collaborator, teacher, writer,
family historian, and a ‘new woman’ pursuing a profession in the arts at
the beginning of the 20th century.
Researcher
at the Australian National University, Pam Lane, assisted with this exhibition
since 2015. Eirene Mort was born in Sydney, Australia. In 1899, at the age of
19, she travelled to London to study art and design, returning to Sydney in
1903. She moved to Canberra and began recording its heritage from 1920-1926.
