Paris was surrounded by walls, built at different periods in history, first to protect the residents and later to also collect taxes. Only a few traces of these walls survived over time. Some sections of the Philippe Auguste City Walls remain. They are medieval walls in the Marais district.
Near the Philippe Auguste City Walls is the Saint Paul-Saint Louis Church. The current church was built from 1627 to 1641 during the reign of Louis XIII of France. The façade is Italian with French Gothic. The dome is 55 metres (180 feet) high.
