Liberty Enlightening the World (La Liberte Eclairant Le Monde), otherwise known as the Statue of
Liberty, was erected on Liberty Island (formerly known as Bedloe’s Island) in
New York in 1886. It was a gift from the people of France.
Designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste
Bartholdi (1834-1904), a much smaller bronze model of the monument was placed
in the Museum of Luxembourg in Paris in 1900. The statue was then transferred
to the lawns of the Jardin du Luxembourg in 1906.
The inscription on the tablet held in the statue's hand is "July IV MDCCLXXVI" which is the date of America's Declaration of Independence. The inscription on the model's tablet is "15 de Novembre 1889" - the date the model was completed.
She was retired from the Luxembourg garden in 2012
for repair and preservation, and was replaced with this bronze replica
(photograhped).
