In the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris stands the
monument, The Lion of Nubia and its Prey, by French sculptor Auguste Cain.
Auguste Nicholas Cain (1822-1894), born in Paris, studied
the animalier bronze technique—painting or sculpting realistic portrayals of
animals—and is known for his works of wild and domestic animals. The technique
was popular in 19th century France.
Another of his large works is of two dogs, Fanfareau
and Brillador, at the Chateau de Chantilly.
