Sighnagi, the small
town in the eastern region of Kakheti (famous for its wine) in Georgia is a popular
tourist destination. It lies about 113 kilometres from the capital Tbilisi. It
is relatively close to the Dagestan border. It is also known as the Love City.
Sighnagi is noted for fruit
orchards, grape harvesting, wine making, traditional carpets, and traditional
food. Also in the region are many monuments and monasteries.
It is a quaint
medieval town walled with 18th century fortifications. It also has intriguing
architecture – especially the Georgian balconies. With an undulating landscape,
walking is good exercise within the tiny town in the eastern foothills of the
Gombori Range. Views overlook Alazani Valley and extend to the Greater Caucasus
Mountains. Attractions include the two Georgian Orthodox churches – the St.
George church and the St. Stephen church. It deserves the name Sighnagi the
Love City.
