The Festival of
Archeology is an annual event in the United Kingdom, organized by the Council
for British Archaeology (CBA). This year’s festival will take place from 11-26
July, 2015.
It’s an event for everyone,
not just archaeologists. The Festival of Archaeology showcases human activity
in the past, primarily through the recovery and unearthing of material, such as
artifacts and architecture, with special events across the UK hosted by
museums, heritage organisations (such as UNESCO), national and country parks,
universities, local societies, and community archaeologists.
Over 1,000 events have
been organized for people to experience local archaeological heritage and
history in action. These include excavation open days (dig-ins),
behind-the-scenes tours, workshops, guided walks, talks, identification events,
family days, and so on.
Archaeology is both a
social science and a humanity, branching into and across fields such as anthropology,
history, geology, classics, art, ethnology, geography, linguistics, semiology,
physics, chemistry, maritime archaeology, paleoecology, paleozoology, and
paleobotany. It studies human pre-history from the development of the first
stone tools. It studies human evolution and cultural evolution. Archaeology
includes surveying, excavation, and the analysis of data collected.
The CBA, founded in
1944, is an educational charity in UK that promotes the appreciation and care
of the historic environment (ancient and historic buildings, monuments, and
antiquities) for the benefit of present and future generations. Their current
strategy for 2010-2015 is entitled ‘Making Archaeology Matter.’
