About 150 kilometres
east of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia in the Kvareli district of the Kakheti
region is a small monastery - Akhali Shuamta. It has two parts – the old ruins of the Basilica
of the 5th century and a small domed church of the 7th century - and the new monastery beside the old one. Shuamta
is a small village in the middle of the mountains.
