The bat is one of my favourite works by Tanzanian painter Edward Said
Tingatinga. Tingatinga (1932-1972), from Dar es Salaam, painted the bat in his
last year of life. In fact, he began painting commercially in 1968, so he only
painted for four years.
He is well-known for his series of African animals and wildlife – such as
the hippo, giraffe, baboon, armadillo, and elephant. His artwork continues in
postcards and other commercial works, and has influenced many other artists.
