A Rothschild giraffe was the first giraffe calf born at the Port Lympne
Reserve, near Ashford in Kent, England, for eight years. Rothschild giraffes
are endangered, with only 750 remaining in the wild across the world.
The female calf was born on Tuesday 26 July 2016 to first-time parents
Valentino and Lunar. Only a week old and she is already five feet tall (1.5
metres).
Port Lympne Reserve is an animal park and part of a European breeding
project designed to save the Rothschild giraffe.
Victoria Snook, the giraffe’s keeper, said that the calf and is doing well,
exploring her enclosure, watched by her mother Lunar and aunt Lehana. The
animal director at the reserve, Adrian Harland, said that the female baby
giraffe would play an important role in future conversation.
The Rothschild giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) are predominantly from Kenya and Uganda. The giraffes have no markings on the lower legs, and the markings on their body are jagged or uneven shaped.
She is yet to be named.
