Tate Britain art gallery has the largest collection of works by British
artist Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) in several rooms, called The Paintings of J.M.W. Turner. Turner is known for his
history, landscape, and marine paintings. Described by John Ruskin as the
‘father of modern art’ Turner often shocked his contemporaries with his loose
brushstrokes and vibrant colour, but was a trailblazer for his techniques and
subject matter.
He is widely recognized for his watercolours and oil paintings that focus
on light to give a luminous glow to his works. In the 1820s Turner experimented
with new pigments to make his colours more vivid and more varied.
