The National Museum of Nairobi is holding an
exhibition of Emmanuel Kariuki’s work from 10-31 October 2017. The exhibition
is called ‘’Safari – In Search of Latent Talent.’’
Emmanuel Kariuki explores the theme of
traditional culture in confluence with Western culture, in an impressionist
style that includes nature, wildlife, and livelihoods in urban and rural
settings.
He avoids realism and opts for the freedom
to stylize, romanticize and ‘’even distort’’ nature to express his message. He
works with paint and fibre-glass to create three-dimensional objects, as well
as creating stuffed animals.
Emmanuel Kariuki has a masters’ degree in
art and design, and was a tertiary teacher and a museum exhibits designer.
The title of the exhibition refers to his
effort to ‘’rediscover the talent that has remained dormant for many years.’’
