Natela Iankoshvili was a Georgian oil painter, graphic artist, author, and book illustrator.
Natela Iankoshvili (1918-2008) studied in the Visual Arts Department at the Tbilisi Academy of Fine Arts. She worked mainly in the genre of landscape and portrait painting.
She travelled to Cuba in 1961 and dedicated a series of oil paintings and graphic works to the country. She is most noted for her illustrations in the 1960s for Georgia’s epic poem, The Knight in the Panther Skin, by the 16th century poet Shota Rustaveli.
She was regarded as a laconic, romantic, unrestrained stylist with an individual palette of colours, synthesizing Georgian modernist arts and the traditions of European painting.
She won the people’s artist of Georgia award in 1976 and the laureate of Rustaveli award in 1995.
