The tingatinga art form was named after Tanzanian painter, Edward Said Tingatinga (1932-1972) from Dar es Salaam.
Tingatinga’s
paintings often included recycled materials – even bicycle paint which enhanced
the colours of his artwork. Although he painted landscapes, his most popular series
were of African animals and wildlife, mainly stylized or in caricature form. He
began painting commercially in 1968, so he only painted for four years before
his death. However, he taught his style to others, and it has continued in many
forms with the main themes of bright colors and African animals.
The photographs are ES Tingatinga's paintings displayed in the Sankara Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.
