January 7 is the day of the Georgian Orthodox Christmas procession before
thier midnight mass to herald the birth of Christ and the end of 40 days of
fasting. The festive parade – the procession – is called Alilo. Alilo –
Alleluyah – is a mass walk dressed in celebratory clothing.
At the Alilo procession clergymen carry crosses, flags, and icons, while
children, traditionally dressed in white, lead the parade – symbolizing angels
on foot. People in the crowd can join in the parade.
The procession begins at Rose Revolution Square, along Rustaveli Avenue,
around the Freedom Monument at Liberty Square, and ends at the Cathedral of St.
Trinity where the Patriarch of All Georgia welcomes everyone to celebrate
Christmas.
