Tbilisi, Georgia, hosted the first National Dairy Congress on March 10,
2016. The main themes of the conference were investment, food safety standards,
and modern technologies in the dairy industry.
The event, organized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
(EBRD) was attended by sector experts, suppliers of dairy industry materials
and equipment, manufacturers, and farmers.
A recent FAO and EBRD study showed that Georgia’s dairy industry required
updated technologies, more efficient production, and improved hygiene
standards. The study recommended improvements, such as better feed and fodder
production for animals, improved animal health, improved farm management, and
hygienic milk-handling to improve dairy milk production by up to 35%.
The transfer of knowledge to all dairy farmers will continue as part of the
National Dairy Congress initiatives. The central component of the initiative is
training to farmers.
