The Zurab Tsereteli
Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in Tbilisi, Georgia, holds a permanent exhibition
of Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli.
Zurab Tsereteli (1934-)
was born in Tbilisi and graduated from the Tbilisi Academy of Arts where he
majored in painting. However he is also noted for his bronze sculptures and
mosaics. After graduating he went to France to continue his studies.
In the early 1960s he
worked for the Institute of Ethnography and Archeology of the Georgian Academy
of Sciences, which led to his prolific works of folk art. One of his
distinctions is the rebirth of the ancient technique of cloisonne enamel and
stained glass works, but he is most famous for his large monumental projects.
It was in France where he met Picasso and Mark Chagall, and expanded his range
of works to include sculpture, ceramics, stained glass, and mosaics. Since 1989
he has been living in Moscow, Russia.
One of Tsereteli’s
works, Good Deafeats Evil (1990) is a bronze sculpture of St. George the
Victorious on the north lawn of the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
