2016 Tbilisi Half Marathon: 23 October

The fifth annual Tbilisi Half Marathon and Kid’s Run was held on Sunday 23 October 2016 in the Georgian capital. Organized by the German building company Heidelbergcement, the race incorporated a 21.1 kilometre half marathon, a 10 kilometre race, a 500 metre fun run for children aged 6-11 and a 100 metre sprint for 12-15 year olds.

The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and the German Embassy in Georgia hosted the events to promote a healthy lifestyle and raise funds for at-risk children – donated to the Children’s Hospice in Georgia. The start and finish line on Rustaveli Avenue was the centre of family events with cheerleaders and stalls.

Tourism has declined and the government blames the local beggars in The Capital. Ndiaye must rid the streets of beggars, according to a decree from the Minister. Ndiaye instructs his department to carry out weekly raids. One of the raids leads to the death of lame beggar, Madiabel, who ran into an oncoming vehicle as he tried to escape, leaving two wives and eight children. Soon after, another raid resulted in the death of the old well-loved, comic beggar Papa Gorgui Diop. Enough is enou
