Kenyan catfish include the Common Catfish (Clarius gariepinus) and the Smoothhead
Catfish (Clarius liocephalus). Both
are about 32 centimetres (12.5 inches) long.
The Smoothhead Catfish lives in the freshwater Lake
Victoria and the River Tana. It prefers waters with water lillies and swamp
plants, such as papyrus. It also like high mountain streams. They are a
vulnerable species.
The Common Catfish (pictured below) - darker than the common catfish - lives in freshwater rivers, lakes, and swamps throughout the countries of Africa and the Middle East. It can survive in adverse conditions, such as polluted waters and high temperatures. However, it is threatened by over-fishing.
