A bird is nesting in the globe
sculpture at the National Galley of Australia.
In 2002 the National Gallery of
Australia (NGA), in Canberra, commissioned Neil Dawson’s sculpture called ‘Diamonds’
purchased with assistance from ActewAGL.
Diamonds is a globe suspended in
space – as an outside sculptural piece next to the NGA building.
The globe is aluminium extrusion
and mesh painted with synthetic polymer automotive paints with stainless steel
fittings and cables. It is 450 centimetres in diameter (14 feet 9 inches).
Neil Dawson (1948-) is a sculptor
from New Zealand, and is known for his large-scale pieces, usually crafted from
aluminium and stainless steel.
Visitors to the NGA love the globe
in the sky – and so too does a bird that thinks this is the perfect place to
build a nest.
