The Alaverdi Monastery is located in Kakheti, the eastern region of Georgia.
It was initially built in the 6th century and renovated in the 11th century. Kvirike III of Kakheti instigated the renovations and extensions that are seen today,
Kakheti is a wine region, and the monks grow vines and make their own wine. The Alaverdi Monastery Cellar dates back to the 10th and 12th centuries.
There is currently an archaeological site in part of the complex.
