This year, 2023, marks the 35th anniversary of the UNESCO Silk Roads Programme which was launched to preserve and promote the shared legacy of the cultural, scientific, and commercial exchanges which occurred along the Silk Roads.
The Silk Roads are the land and maritime routes historically connecting east and southeast Asia to Central Asia, the Russian steppes, the Iranian and Anatolian Plateaus, and the Arabian Peninsula before crossing into northeast Africa, as well as eastern and southern Europe. These roads facilitated the movement of goods, people, and ideas.
The UNESCO Silk Roads Programme promoted the history of these routes for 35 years. The first phase, launched in 1988, was an ‘Integral Study of the Silk Roads: Roads of Dialogue’ which included five major scientific expeditions. Phase two, launched in 2012, was ‘The Silk Roads Programme for Dialogue, Diversity, and Development’ to build partnerships across the region. In 2014, the ‘Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an Tianshan Corridor’ focused on China, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
The UNESCO Silk Roads Programme continues to foster research on the shared heritage along the routes.
The programme also organised the annual Youth Eyes on the Silk Roads international photo contest for youth aged 14-25 years. For this contest, UNESCO is presenting 140 photographs on the railings of its headquarters in Paris.
