German artist, printmaker, and sculptor Georg Baseliz (1938-) was born Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz, Germany. He studied in East Berlin until he was expelled for ‘sociopolitical immaturity’ in 1957 and moved to West Berlin where he finished his art studies in 1962. It was during this time that he changed his surname to Baselitz.
Georg Baselitz had his first solo art exhibition in 1963. His artworks focus around war motifs, heroes, German Expressionism and folk art, children’s art, and the art of the ‘mentally ill.’
In 1969, he began to paint his subjects upside down to ‘slow down his painting process as well as the viwer’s comprehension of the motif.’ During the 1980s, he used a range of formal and historical art references. Currently, he creates large-scale scuptures made of painted wood.
His artworks are exhibited at the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery in Pantin, France, 6 kilometres (4 miles) north of Paris, from 22 January to 27 May 2023.
