Born in England, and living in France, artist Russell Boncey is exhibiting his ‘Inner Worlds – Secret Gardens’ art exhibition in the Town Hall of the 6th arrondissement in Paris from 1-22 April 2023.
His artworks focus on contemplation and dreams. He reveals the landscapes and figures of his inner world although still enabling viewers to make their own interpretations.
Russell Boncey says ‘I am an engaged artist and my vision is of one beautifully peacefully colourful world … The colours I use, and the forms I create, constitute a highly personal pictorial vocabulary – a vocabulary that expresses my lifelong struggle to achieve those beautiful ideals of simplicity, clarity, and elegance.’
Of his technique, he says ‘My work is abstract and combines collage with multiple water-based techniques such as egg tempura, gouache, watercolour, and inks.’ He said in a 2021 interview with Complete France that he coined the term “Narrative Colour Field” to describe his contemporary approach to painting that synthesizes the romantic concerns of the 19thcentury with those of the Colour Field movement from 1940s and 1950s New York. Inspired by European modernism, Colour Field painting is closely related to abstract expressionism. He says ‘My approach grows out of a long line of European and North American painters inspired by nature.’
The exhibition ‘Inner Worlds – Secret Gardens’ encourages visitors to appropriate Russell Boncey’s pictorial reveries in their own way. ‘Thus enriched by sharing, what could become of these secret gardens?’
