2015 International Day of Yoga: Kashmir plans state-of-the-art yoga centre

PTI: dnaindia.com

India-administered Jammu and Kashmir wants to be the yoga capital of India, following the 2015 International Day of Yoga.

The resort of Mantalai in Udhampur is being developed as an international yoga centre (IYC) which is said to be ‘second to none’ in India.

The IYC aims to accommodate swimming pools, a gymnasium, auditoriums, and spas, as well as airstrips, helipads, hostels, a zoo, stud farms, cow shelters, orchards, forests, and a business convention centre in a 125-acre area.

The project report will be submitted in July/August 2015 to the ministry of tourism for funding. It is expected, pending funding, to take two years to complete.

The area once housed the Ashram of late Yogi Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari. After his death in an air crash in 1994 the Ashram has remained shut, and it was taken over by the state government. The state government now plans to make Mantalai the yoga capital, with up-to-date infrastructure, as a stand-alone tourist destination. Kashmir plans state-of-the-art yoga centre, not just for yoga, but for wellness.

The acacia thorn trees of Kenya

The famous "whistling thorn tree" and the Umbrella Thorn tree of Kenya are species of acacia that do have thorns, or spines. Giraffes and other herbivores normally eat thorny acacia foliage, but leave the whistling thorn alone. Usually spines are no deterrent to giraffes. Their long tongues are adapted to strip the leaves from the branches despite the thorns. The thorny acacia like dry and hot conditions.
