In the Georgian
capital, Tbilisi, floods due to heavy rains killed eight people on Sunday, June
14, 2015. The zoo was also flooded and many animals were killed. About half of
the 600 animals are missing, roaming the streets of Tbilisi. Three people were
found dead in the zoo, at least two of them were zoo keepers.
The missing animals
included tigers, lions, bears, and wolves. Fish and birds were also affected. A
hippopotamus was found nearby, and was tranquilised with a tranquiliser gun.
The River Mtkvari
burst and overflowed. Cars were damaged and power lines were down.
The Georgian Prime
Minister, Irakli Garibashvili, asked residents to stay indoors until animals
were found. Some were killed, others captured, and some tranquilised and
rescued.
