The Bristol Zoo
Gardens in England is celebrating the birth of a pygmy hippopotamus. The baby hippo’s gender has not yet been
established, and it is yet to be named. It was born three weeks ago, and is
doing well.
The baby is staying
in the hippo house, which has a heated swimming pool. The hippo house is
currently closed to the public to allow mother Sirana and father Nato to get used to their new baby.
The pygmy hippo is
native to Liberia, West Africa, in the Sapo National Park. Pygmy hippos are
endangered, with about 2,000 remaining throughout the world. The Bristol Zoo
Gardens are part of an international captive breeding program for pygmy hippos.
Martina Nicolls is the author of Liberia's Deadest Ends (2012) that features the pygmy hippopotamus.
